We are officially in the 21st century people, well to be precise its more like less than a month away from being a decade into the 21st century to be exact.
As a struggling college student...well struggling defined as how to afford my ever growing cooking experiments devised alone at night in my kitchen...I have become utterly absorbed entirely in all things Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS).
Now since starting college, the typical questions you get from the sloppy wanna-be frat guy at a "thirsty-Thursday" night party is the favorite one liner...."So, uhh..what's your major". When I reply I get two responses, one being "whats that?" or the favorite quizzical look of said drunk wanna-be frat guy in pretending he has any idea of what words are actually coming out of my mouth. In my response (which I typically dread) are the words its Home Ec....
Now I just want to say that I get that most people are not up on the times, even people in my field are still a century behind on the times, but come on people please GET IT! I guess what really urks me the most is that people don't take it seriously. I'm just the homey little girl trying to teach other girls how to bake cakes. But then I have to wonder, aren't we in a recession? How do people think we got there!? Without consumer education being a requirement in most states for high school students these days could you imagine what turmoil the future of our country would be in?! Oh, sorry about my mini rant, nothing personal :)
All I really want to say is open your eyes to new things. FCS is an incredible field that explores so many subjects. I get to work with kids for a living teaching nutrition and cooking, fashion and apparel merchandising, resource management, human development and family relationships, and interior and environmental design! My job ricks! Out of college I have a 100% job placement rate! How many college grads can say that!? So next time you snub the home-ec teacher, take a second look and know your facts whoever is reading this....
Happy Wednesday.
Cheers, Lo
